What is copper plating?

By copper plating, also called electrolytic copper plating or galvanic copper plating, we mean the galvanic treatment which consists in the deposition of a layer of copper on the surface of a metal. It takes place exclusively by galvanic, using electrolytic baths, in which the object to be coppered is the cathode while the pure copper cathodes make up the anode. The electrolytic baths can be alkaline or acidic.

This coating process is used to protect the metal from corrosion, a natural consequence of the action of atmospheric agents and more. It is essential to emphasize that, unlike other types of metal coatings, copper plating represents a preventive processing operation of the product, ie preparation for other treatments or as a finish if then painted with a clear coat. In fact, its application makes it possible to improve adhesion and the protective value of galvanic treatments subsequently applied to the metal itself. Therefore, chrome plating, nickel plating and brass plating processes would not achieve an optimal result if the coating of a copper layer was not previously applied to the support; in fact, thick acid copper plating is used to be then “spread” to cover minor defects in the underlying material.
But what are the copper plating applicable to metals?

Alkaline copper plating

In the field of metal copper plating, the galvanic treatment known as electrolytic alkaline copper plating is applied for the preparation of iron, brass, zamak and cast iron; it is also possible to sandblast or polish the piece before treatment.

Alkaline baths lend themselves to direct copper plating of iron and zamak. The copper thickness deposited at the end of the treatment is very modest.

Acid copper plating

The acid copper plating process is applied to materials such as iron, aluminum, steel, copper, brass, zamak and cast irons; it is also possible to sandblast or polish the piece before treatment.

Acid copper plating baths, in which the electrolyte consists of a concentrated solution of copper sulphate added to sulfuric acid, allow to obtain copper deposits of considerable thickness; this allows you to greatly improve the aesthetic appearance of the product.
Among the numerous processes and galvanic treatments it has been dealing with for decades, Eurogalvano Srl also offers copper plating. In particular, the company carries out both alkaline and acid copper plating interventions. All based on the needs and requirements of its customers.
